March 12, 2016

Its night two of the 22nd annual Winter Meltdown here at the Southern New Mexico Speedway and boy did things get slick. Jacob Gallardo would take his J17 back to victory lane with a clean sweep on the weekend but not one moment of it came easy. Unfortunately the little thing called tech would get in the way and the night was not to be for Jake. Ricky Thornton Jr needed about one more lap to make a run at Jake in the A main but it doesn’t matter because after the failed tech from the J17 the 20Rt inherits the win coming all the way from 14th! The 71 of Phillip Houston would ride it out till the bitter end as the wind blew and the track went icy slick. Last nights second place of Stormy Scott would also throw his name in the hat to dig for a win all night long.

Legends cars would kick off the show again for us tonight, as they would set for 15 laps. Jake Gallardo would try and pull double duty tonight as he steps into a legend car but wouldn’t last long as he would drag the wall on the green flag and that car is done. His night would get better but legends racing would continue without him. The Ak-47 of Esquivel will lead us to the green as we try again to get it this one started. Both the Ak-47 and 902 of Zuloaga with a clean start but out of turn 2 the 902 with some clean track and to the lead he would go. Only 4 laps into this one and the top 3 from last night are already running top 3 again, just a flip-flopped order. The 77 of CJ Hulsey was close last night and is sitting pretty again tonight in second but he wont take long to make a move because its only lap 5 and down the back he is grabbing gas to the lead he goes. 10 laps to go and trouble turn 2 as one car goes around. Clean restart but the 77 Hulsey is gonna have his work cut out for him because last nights winner, the 37 of Dusty Riggs is here to play. Only 5 laps left on the ticker and the 77 leads the 77 just barely as they gap the field. A great battle going on 3 wide for third as the 902 holds off a hard fighting 237 of Arellano and 54 of Gunner Harris. Down to 2 laps left and Hulsey holding steady over Riggs who cant seem to make the passes stick tonight. Checkered flag flies and at the line, it’ll be the 77 of Cj makin it count on the final night, as he will hold of a strong willed and fast racecar of Dusty Riggs in 37. Steven “Scuba” Arellano would slide his way into third as mike Zuloaga would settle with 4th.

It’s rough and tough, rumbling and grumbling, Southwest Shaw Trucking late models rolling out now! A full 25 laps for of rubbin’s racin’ headed your way as the green flag drops. Quick caution for the 44 and 744 getting tangled up but to the rear they go and we try again. The G17 Fito Gallardo will dart on the retry and last night’s winner, the 42 of Don Shaw pushing the limit hard. Only 3 laps in and its caution number one as the wind is picking up. Fito with a stellar restart but one more complete and the 44 around again. This is technically her second caution and that will bring an end t her night. 21 to go and the track is really slicking up but the G17 is still grooving like normal. Gallardo is dragging his car all the way around and diving corners like the track is perfect. 16 to go and the 42 is falling off slowly from the lead but it wont matter because 10 in 15 to go and Fito Gallardo as caught lapped traffic. Lappers in the way and here’s Don! Both drivers make it clean through the lappers but its bumper to bumper again as they got clean air for a distance now. 12 to go and Shaw is all over Gallardo as they pull way out over the 24 of Rick Ortega. Over half the way there, 10 to go and the wind is slicking this track up heavy! 8 to go and the leaders are back on lapped traffic! Married to the high side both drivers get through clean but Fito cant escape the clutches of Don Shaw tonight! 2 more laps down and Fito is loving the clean air but 5 to go and lappers again. Wont be such smooth sailing this time for Fito as he gets hung up on a single car and there goes Don Shaw to the lead! Fito falls in right behind him but the damage is done. Superman Don Shaw will lead the last 4 laps of the 2016 Winter Meltdown for the Late models and you better bust out the broom because it’s a clean sweep on the weekend for the 42! Fito Gallardo led almost every lap tonight but a stroke of bad luck and second is where he settles. Rick Ortega keeps that 24 machine locked up and in third place.

Street Stocks are ready to put on a show as 12 drivers are geared up for 15 laps of battle. The 00 of McCarty will go to the lead early again I this one but only 1 lap complete and caution as we got a car doing donuts in turn 2. Looks like a clean run coming up after a good restart from the 00 but 2 more complete and its caution #3. The 44Jt of Jaime Torres and the 74 of Jason Josselyn are both on the move after the restart and we finally get some good laps in. we are inside 10 laps with 44Jt charging hard but 8 to go and he will put it up and over turn 4! Nice save from Torres but the damage is done as he fell backward like a sinking stone. BIG BREAK for the 44JT though as caution before we complete that lap. Clean restart and we work our way to 5 to go with Josselyn moving that 74 fast in third. Wont matter how fast he goes though because it’s the 44JT going straight through turn 4 and this time the yellow comes out. Torres will have to take it to the back as McCarty and Josselyn drag us back racing with 5 to go. The 36 of Jason Ziehl has also moved that car inside the top 3 and is ready to pounce at the slightest mistake by Josselyn. Josselyn is working it high as Ziehl goes low but Josselyn holding onto second for now as three to go! The 36 was moving back around Josselyn but McCarty is way out as the white flag waves. As the checkered flag waves it’ll be another broom as Shawn McCarty takes nights 1 and 2 for the 2016 winter Meltdown in the USRA Street Stocks! The 36 of Ziehl was on a mission there but coming up just short tonight as second will have to do. Another solid third place run from Jason Josselyn as after the race he told me with a better slick setup he knows he can go battle for the win. Gonna be a good season with these guys.

The wind is howling, the cars are rolling and its finally time! Modified time of Night two for the 2016 Winter Meltdown that is! We have 22 cars starting this main after 2 track provisional and it’s the 2S of Stormy Scott dragging us to the stand. Inaugural flagman Chelsea Scott throws the green flag and its go time for 30 laps!! Stormy with a great jump out but a little ancy coming into turn 3 and over the berm he goes! Great save from the 2S but way back in the pack, as this track must be way slicker than these guys thought. Before the leaders complete that first lap its big trouble turn 3! It’ll be a short yellow with a complete restart as the 2S catches the big break of the night right there. Scott will have a better lap 1 on this second chance and it will be Houston 71 and Tipton 99 both battling hard for second. The 71 of Houston will slide his way cleanly into second after 3 laps but here comes last night’s winner Jake Gallardo in J17!! 27 to go and Stormy Scott with trouble through 3&4 again as Phillip Houston goes rocketing by! Still 24 laps on the ticker and its caution again. The track like a giant ice rink out there from so much wind now. Phillip Houston has a good grab on the start but here comes “The Strom”! Jake Gallardo still in third but now its Fito Gallardo moving into 4th! Those two will team up and its like a train gang now because they are moving! 20 laps to go and it’ll be Jake by a nose at the line for second. Stormy will drive back I front of Jake but the low line is working solid as Jake takes second cleanly by a length at the line for 19 to go. Jake Gallardo would push hard for the next 4 laps and 15 to go he had caught Phillip Houston to make things interesting. As the leaders battled the 2S and G17 would go at it for third, not realizing that the 20 RT of Ricky Thornton Jr was on the move and closing fast! Jake Gallardo would hug the low line and Phillip Houston would take the lead back with some high side hustling but 10 to the J17 would take it back. The 20RT would also clear the G17 and start to work on the 2S for third. 7 to go and Jake will take the lead by a length now and into turn 374 Phillip Houston is pushing way to hard and over the top he goes. Great save there from Houston but he lost a lot of ground and is now at the mercy of Stormy Scott and Ricky Thornton! Only 6 circuits left and the 20RT clears the 2S for third! Not much time but Ricky Thornton is a magic worker all night. 4 left and Houston is back to battle with Jake as there are lappers everywhere! Thornton has caught them both and he will slide job in between lappers for second as the white flag waves! With only one lap left the 20RT would come alive but no cigar tonight as he would be just short of the win. Jake Gallardo would win this race by just about a car length but if it’s a car length or a mile, it doesn’t matter because Jacob Gallardo would win both nights of the 2016 Winter Meltdown. Unfortunately in tech, the J17 would have a small issue with his ride height, which resulted in a disqualification. This means that Ricky Thornton Jr is tonight’s A Main winner for the modifieds!!! Phillip Houston and Stormy Scott would round out the top 3 with spectacular drives each.

If you missed the action this weekend then you do not wanna be left out again in a few weeks when we come back racing again for the ASCS 360 winged sprint car Southwest Shootout!! April 1-2 this place will take flight as we add wings to some of the baddest cars known to man.
Gates will open at 5 and racing at 7:45. Don’t be late.
