OPENING NIGHT BELONGS to the #43

Filed under: Site News — SarahQ @ 10:47 am

Sarah Q. Stevens (Las Cruces, NM May 7th, 2012) If you are looking to race a car at Southern New Mexico Speedway, and can’t decide on a number…………………..Try the #43!! With Curt Barnett’s #43 machine winning in the Legends, and Garrett Alberson taking home the victory in both the Late Models and the Super Trucks……………..it was a #43 kind of night.

And we started off the night with the UMP Late Models, and a heat 1 victory going to none other than the #43 of Garrett Alberson, with Sherman Barnett following close behind. Heat 2 would belong to another Garrett………..however this time it would be Garrett Higgins in a stellar peformance with a new to the class Walton Kyle, Jr. coming in 2nd. In a conversation after the races, Garrett Alberson accredited his victory to really great pill draw. Starting on the pole of the Main Event, much like he looked the previous night in El Paso he jumped to the lead and never looked back. It was definitely a Garrett and Garrett show throughout the entire 20 lap Main Event. However, it was the #43 of Alberson taking home the win.

In Legend Heat Race Action, we didn’t see the #43 of Curt Barnett take the track. Heat 1 would go to the out of town driver Keith Schmidt followed by Steven Gonzalez in the 1G. Heat 2 would belong to the #21 of Allen Gattis with Lincoln County’s own Robert Sheppard coming in 2nd. The Main Event looked like it would be a repeat perforamance of Friday Night, as within 4 laps you would have the #43 of Curt Barnett taking the lead followed ever so closely by the #21 of Allen Gattis. In the end, the victory would belong to the #43 of Curt Barnett, followed by Allen Gattis, Steve Gonzalez, Dusty Riggs, and Robert Sheppard rounding out the top 5.

So if you are keeping count, we have so far run 2 classes, and both winners have been #43. Well, the Super Trucks were no different. Starting off heat race action, much like he started off the Late Model Race, it was Garrett Alberson taking the win followed very closely by Christy Georges in the #44 and Sherman in the #82 a close 2nd. Heat 2 would belong to the #6 of Walton Kyle, Sr. with John Delph and Nita Deetz running close behind. Once again, same story different class…………..starting on the pole it would be the #43 of Garrett Alberson taking home the Super Truck Main Event Victory. Walton Kyle, had a strong finish close behind in 2nd with Christy Georges, Sherman Barnett, and Lloyd Duffy rounding out the top 5.

3 classes in the books, and so far it has been a #43 show. The USRA Street Stocks, however would see a new number winning. It would be the #72 of Kevin George taking home the win with the #64 of Javie Chavez following a close 2nd. Heat 2 would belong to Mike Rosales in the 48JR with Travis Harrison and his 10GT machine running a close 2nd. Heat 3 would belong to the #4 of Joe Cooper with the #13 of Ryan VanWinkle coming in 2nd. In Main event racing, it looked like Mike Rosales would start his season, much like he ended last seasn……………ON TOP!! But you can never count out the 10GT of Travis Harrison who came in 2nd and new comer to the class Javie Chavez would take 3rd, followed by the #4 of Joe Cooper, and it would be another Harrison………..Aaron in the #14 rounding out the top 5.

It was Modified Time at Souther New Mexico Speedway. It would be Vail Az’s very own Nick O’Neil in his 88N taking heat 1 followed by Tom Georges in his #28, and Jimmy Ray in the #9. Heat 2 would go to the “People’s Champ” Fito Gallardo in the G17 holding off the #96 of Dusty Riggs, and the #44 of Christy Georges. Heat 3 would once again be dominated by a Gallardo, this time it was the J17 of Jacob Gallardo taking the win. the 187 of Lee Heiligenthal and Donovan Flores in the 07 would round out the Top 3. Starting the 30 lap Main Event it would be the Gallardos side by side on the front row. And for the first few laps, it appeared that it just might be a Gallardo/Gallardo finish. It would be the yellow flags that got them as you would find the G17 of Fito Gallardo slowly falling back in the pack. Jake in the J17 however, would not follow his Dad. Holding on through 2 yellow late in the race that could have easily changed the outcome of the race………it would be the J17 of Jake Gallardo taking home the W. Followed very closely by the 88N of Nick O’Neil, Donovan Flores in the 07, Tom Georges in the #28 and Christy Georges rounding out the top 5 of the night.

WALTON KYLE SR. TAKES HOME THE ENDURO PAY DAY!!!

Filed under: Site News — SarahQ @ 9:20 am

Sarah Q. Stevens (Las Cruces, NM)-On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Southern New Mexico, Walton Kyle Sr. proves that perseverance pays off.
Shortly after he hit the 150 lap mark, Walton Kyle’s motor started to “miss”. In his after race interview he told the crowd “we took it in, they did something to it” and we came back out. And once he was back on the track, and the leader at the time the 1I left with a blown motor, it was an all Kyle show. With the crowd on their feet, he came to grab his $2500 pay day!
Jumping out of the car with a smile as big as the Grand Canyon and jumping up and down pounding the top of the car, the excitement was contagious. With his dad riding co pilot and his son as the Crew Chief it was good to see the whole Kyle family celebrate his victory.
As the auctioning of the car came to an end, it was the highest bidder Leland Harrison who took home the winning Enduro car. We may see the Harrison family celebrating come October 5th, when we host the next Enduro.
Don’t forget we have the El Paso Speedway Park season opener this Friday Night April 27th. Gates open @ 5:30 racing starts @ 7:45. They will open the season with the Renegade Sprint Cars.

Scott IS the Storm

Filed under: Site News — SarahQ @ 8:24 am

Royal Jones-Las cruces driver Stormy Scott makes it 5 main event wins in a row. A month ago Stormy won the main on qualifying at the King of America challenge. Then he went on to win the 15,000 payday and become The King of America. Then in his own car came to the Pre-season scramble here in LC and took that checkered. The next weekend it’s off to the annual Tulie season opener and in the wind, the Storm wins again. Now back with the USMTS where he will run most of the season against the best in the country– on a rainy Thursday night the Storm takes his fifth in a row against the very best this country has to offer including NASCAR star Kenny Wallace.
